Real Life Sciences Japan to attend 19th International Conference of Pharmaceutical Medicine (ICPM)

Real Life Sciences Japan will be exhibiting at ICPM 2018 and we are excited to see what is in store for the booming pharma space in Japan.

The theme for this year is ‘The Future of Medicines Development’.

Japan possess one of the most successful medical industries in the world. However, with its fast aging population, it is likely to drive the demand for medicine in the years to come.

ICPM 2018 will highlight the markets that are growing within pharma to meet the escalating demands for new and improved drugs, devices and services.

What can you look out for?

Pharmaceutical Medicine and Clinical Research

Japan continues to be one of the largest pharmaceutical markets in the world despite the challenging business landscape due to demographics. According to the latest official figures from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW)’s Annual Pharmaceutical Production Statistics, the Japanese market for prescription and non-prescription pharmaceuticals in 2017 have summed up to $95 billion (up 2.3% from 2016 in yen terms).

Pharmacovigilance

Japan’s Pharmacovigilance is the process and science of monitoring the safety of medication and taking action to reduce the risks whilst increase the benefits of medication. Currently, medicinal products manufactured in Japan are subject to a strict testing to enhance the assessment of their quality, efficacy and safety before being authorised.

Big data in Medicine’s Development

The current environment for health and medical data in Japan are in siloes – for instance, by type of disease, service provider or region. It is seen to be less cost effective to collect data which are large and deep enough to spin-off the development of new drugs or measure the effectiveness of new treatments. However, this is a trend that would likely change in the coming years.

Artificial Intelligence

More pharma companies in Japan are starting to venture into areas such as AI in drug discovery, health services and even medical devices. With the aging population, AI serves as a support and form of assistance to ease the burden in shortage of medical practitioners and specialists, along with pharma manufacturers.
