NHS - The future of our plans
On 5th July 2018, the NHS turned 70. To celebrate this landmark occasion, the NHS has been looking back on our countries’ history of health, as well as focussing on the future. Here at Real Public Sector, we’re extremely proud to have played a part in supporting one of the nation’s most loved institutions. With various events and initiatives taking place, there’s plenty of opportunity to get involved and honour the outstanding work that’s been done by our people over the years.
Birthday celebrations
To mark seven decades of our NHS, 2018 has involved numerous events taking place throughout the year. These have included:
- Launch of the #NHS70 Parliamentary Awards – seeing ‘health heroes’ rewarded for their commitment
- Health and care innovation expo
- The Big 7Tea
- Westminster Abbey Ceremony for NHS staff
- York Minster Ceremony for NHS staff
Community spirit
Within local, regional and national NHS communities, celebrations are being proactively encouraged. The NHS have a range of suggestions as to how trusts, GPs, dentists, opticians and local authorities can all get involved, so don’t be surprised if you’re caught up in the celebrations when out and about.
When paying a visit to your nearest shopping centre, high street or library, you may come across an exhibit from your local NHS archive, or witness a talk from an influential member of your NHS community. The celebrations will also be happening within the heart of your healthcare service; open days will be taking place at some local practices, allowing you to see first-hand the amazing work that’s being done, as well as gaining an insight into the future for your community.
Shining the spotlight
This year, the NHS has shone the spotlight on some of the biggest priority areas within the institution; highlighting ongoing progress as to how care is delivered within specific areas and sharing plans for the future. The NHS offers over 350 different careers and is the largest UK employer, with over 1.5 million people working towards improved healthcare. Over the months, we’ve been able to find out about how the people who make up the NHS have contributed towards the following:
- March: Genomics
- April: Primary care and diabetes
- May: Mental health
- June: Learning disabilities
- July: Innovation and digital
- August: Cancer
- September: Personalised care and volunteering
- October: Specialised commissioning
- November: Urgent and emergency care
