Why job purpose is key to a successful career in Life Sciences
With almost 75% of UK workers referencing a sense of purpose as the biggest driver when it comes to finding a new job, we understand the importance of matching candidates with positions that will fulfil them. We spoke with consultants from Real Staffing’s permanent Life Sciences team to find out more.
The importance of job satisfaction
You could be forgiven for assuming that salary is the biggest career motivator for most people, however new research suggests that a strong sense of purpose and job satisfaction are also huge drivers across the board. According to this study, almost half (48%) of baby boomers would prioritise purpose over increased pay or a better job title, whereas only 38% of Generation X and 30% of millennials would agree with this. Perhaps this could be due to the financial stability and experience baby boomers are likely to have.
According to research from ‘Investors in People’, employee disengagement could be costing the UK £340 billion a year, with 45% of employees believing they would be more productive if they enjoyed their jobs more. With this in mind, it’s important for employers to ensure their employees have a clear purpose within their job.
The correlation of purpose and happiness
It’s fairly straight forward; job satisfaction directly impacts personal happiness, which improves productivity. If a company can incorporate strategies to ensure employees feel they have purpose in their role, this can help benefit long-term company goals.
Real Staffing’s Robbie Holton explains the impact of driving purpose when finding positions for candidates, ’I placed an Operations Director at a Global Diagnostics company, he needed the opportunity to work closer to home to enable him to spend more time caring for his wife who was diagnosed with MS in 2014. He’s one of only a handful of experts in the country with both the necessary scientific knowledge, as well as the strategic and commercial experience. By matching him to this role, he was able to gain purpose from his career, by making a difference to the world, while still being able commit himself to being able to care for his wife at home’.
